d6 DesignSeven unique games from seven unique designers! |
D6 Design Contest 2009
The d6 Design COntest 2009 has come and gone. All of the winners received a hard copy of the game as well as a pdf version. The contest was great fun and the games were awesome. Everyone did a great job. Oh yeah, and thanks to all the judges who took time playing and testing the entries. Thanks everyone. Hope to see you next year for the d10 contest!
The 2009 d6 Design Contest Book is being compiled as we speak. Several covers are being debated over as well. We hope to get the book out as soon as possible and get all the participants a copy.
The d6 contest has come to an end, the scores are in and the winner is Tark with his RPG entitled "Apprentice". Big congats to Tark for his winning entry! Actually, I want to extend a big congrats to all of the participants in the d6 contest. We had seven unique games which will make a very nice little gaming book. I would also like to say thanks to the three judges who participated in scoriung and critiquing these games - Destriarch, Master of Desaster and BigSimon, your time and effort spent on judging the games was highly appreciated by the d6 participants. Great job to all who participated in this little contest!
All of the particpants have got two weeks to do any last minutes changes or fix anything that is needed. After that, we here at Simian Circle will compile the games into a single pdf and make it available to the public. All of the winners get a paper copy of the game as well as a pdf. The judges will also get a pdf copy of the compiled book for the time and effort they spent judging the games.
I have had a great time with this contest. I actually plan on hosting another one of these contests starting in January 2010. Hopefully we can get some more folks on board and actually offer some prizes this time!
Several points of note.
1. The d6 games are still being judged. All of the judges have been given June 1st as the due date for the time when scores are to be submitted. Compilation of the games will commence after that date as will the sending out of contracts and the publishing of the games.
2. The mysterious tabletop game which we have been working on for around a year near is in playtesting mode. In the next day or so I will be giving a fairly indepth overview of PWN WARS in the forum section.
3. Work on Phaethos RPG continues. Artwork is being completed and final formatting touches are commencing. We plan to officially release all three books in September 2009.
Finishing touches are being finished on the mysterious PWN WARS tabletop game. Full blown testing will commence in the next week or so. We have PWN WARS slated to be released in the fall of 2009.
Simian Circle Games has gathered together a group of designers who are currently working on a series of independent mini-games of no longer than 15 pages in length. These games will be compiled in a single volume and sold as pdf and paperback.
Those who have their games selected to be in the final volume will be able to provide a blurb about their experience in gaming and design. It is our hope that this compilation of mini-rpgs serves as a way to get unknown designers out onto the market with games that generally would have never been published because of their tiny size. We hope that it also provides a type of portfolio for these designers.
Because the games are only 15 pages in length, those who purchase the pdf or the book will be able to sit down and learn a new game in a small period of time. I've seen so many games produced by talented designers that very few people ever get to play. I think a book composed of 10 or so different games of different rules and genres is awesome. According to the nearly 30 people who signed up to participate, they think so too.
Oh, and by the way. All of the games will require only six-sided dice. Everyone has some d6 laying around, don't you? Check out the rules and list of participants using the d6 Design Contest link on the right.
Welcome to Simian Circle Games. The site has just gone up so it will be under construction for a while but feel free to browse around and take a look at what we've got so far.
Those of you who are participating in the d6 design contest should check out the d6 design contest link for more information...
Seven games were submitted for the contest for a participation percentage of 24%. For those of you who submitted a game, congratulations. Busting out a game in four months is no small feat (I'm always amazed at the complexity and sheer wonder of the human mind and imagination).
The judges have all been sent the games and have been given around 1 week per game. An extra week has been thrown in to allow some breathing room for a total judging time of 8 weeks. So judges, play these games, examine and enjoy them.
Once all games have been judged, I will compile them into the book and send them off to the printer. All the participants will receive a paper copy and the judges will receive a pdf and a paper copy at cost (if they desire it).
Well folks, the d6 desgin competition is up and running with 29 participants. I want to say good luck to everyone who is involved in the contest and I hope you enjoy the creative experience.

For those of you who have entered the contest and are currently making your games, you will need to refer to the formatting guidelines as they are provided below.
Formatting guidelines for the D6 Design Contest
Submissions are to be sent as a PDF.
The resolution of the pdf needs to be at least 200 dpi.
The size of the document is to be 8 x 10.5 inches. The finished book size will be 8.5 x 11 inches so take this into account when laying out your margins.
You can use any font you want but it must be embedded in the pdf.
I strongly suggest one of these types of font...
Arial
Book Antiqua
Bookman Old Style
Century
Courier
Garamond
Palatino
Tahoma
Times New Roman
Verdana
The font should be no smaller than 10 point for the main text body. I suggest 10-12 point font depending on the font type.
Artwork must be black and white (if you send in color it will be converted to black and white). You can use line art or grayscale. Each game should have at least 2 works of art.
All pages of your game must be numbered and a table of contents must be provided for the game.
Each game needs a cover page. This cover page does not need to be numbered nor should it be included in your table of contents. The cover page can have artwork but it is not required. Your cover page needs to be 8 x 10.5 inches also.
Character sheets should be included in the pdf and should be numbered and listed in the table of contents.
